I Found a Box of 80s Buttons… and It Sparked Everything Again

Updated: Mar 24

Collection of vintage buttons and pins featuring pop culture icons, slogans like “You and me and the CNE,” and “D.A.R.E to keep kids off drugs.”

There’s something about opening an old box you haven’t touched in years.

You’re not expecting much—maybe some clutter, maybe a few forgotten things. But then you find something that instantly pulls you back.

For me, it was a box of buttons from the 80s.

And not just a couple. A full collection. Bright, loud, unapologetic little circles of personality.

When Buttons Were Everything

If you grew up in the 80s, you already know.

Buttons weren’t just accessories—they were identity.

You pinned them to denim jackets, backpacks, hats—anywhere they would stick. The more, the better. They clashed, they layered, they made noise when you moved. And somehow, that was the point.

They said:

  • What music you loved

  • What you believed in

  • What made you laugh

  • Who you were trying to be that week

It was design in its most raw, unfiltered form.

Bold, Messy, and Completely Free

Looking at them now, what stands out isn’t just the nostalgia—it’s the fearlessness.

The colours? Loud. The typography? All over the place. The graphics? Sometimes questionable… but unforgettable.

There were no rules. Or if there were, nobody cared.

And honestly? That’s what made them so good.

As a designer now, it’s easy to get caught in grids, systems, and “best practices.” But those buttons are a reminder of something important:

Not everything needs to be perfect to be powerful.

Tiny Can Still Be Impactful

Buttons are small. Like, really small.

And yet—they had to grab attention instantly.

That’s something I think about a lot in my work today.

Whether it’s a social media graphic, a digital ad, or a piece of packaging—space is limited. Attention is even more limited.

Those 80s buttons mastered something we’re all still chasing:how to say something quickly, visually, and memorably.

Personality Over Polish

What I love most about that box isn’t the condition (some are scratched, faded, a little worn).

It’s the personality.

Every single one feels intentional—even when it’s chaotic.

And that’s something I bring into my work at CBirdCreative.com.

Because brands don’t connect through perfection—they connect through personality.

Clean design has its place. But if it doesn’t feel like anything, it doesn’t stick.

The Comeback We Didn’t Know We Needed

Here’s the thing—what made those buttons cool in the 80s is exactly what’s working again now.

  • Bold colour choices

  • Playful typography

  • Retro-inspired graphics

  • Imperfect, human design

We’re seeing it everywhere—from branding to social media to packaging.

Not as a copy of the past—but as a reinterpretation.

Because good design doesn’t disappear. It evolves.

Why This Still Matters

Finding that box wasn’t just a nostalgic moment—it was a creative reset.

A reminder that:

  • Design should be fun

  • Personality matters more than perfection

  • Small formats can have big impact

  • And sometimes, the best ideas don’t come from trends—they come from memory

That 80s energy? It still has a place.

Maybe not pinned to a denim jacket (although… it should be). But definitely in how we think, create, and show up as designers.

At CBirdCreative.com, inspiration comes from everywhere—including a forgotten box of 80s buttons.

Because the best creative work doesn’t just follow trends. It remembers what made people feel something in the first place. ✨
